Cooling Blanket - From a Fabric Crafter's Perspective

The Amara is a two-sided quilted blanket. One side, Snowplains, pulls heat off your skin. The other, Sunmeadow Linen, lets that heat escape and stays cozy. Here is how we developed each fabric, written by us, the crafters who made it.

Snowplains: the cooling side

38% modal, 62% polyamide (nylon)

Utilizing the breathability and coolness of modal fibers, paired together with the conductivity of polyamide, we’re able to push cooling levels even higher. Not just lab reports, but practical use.

More smoothness also gives higher heat conductivity, as more surface area touches the skin, extracting more heat.

Being super soft and smooth also means there is some level of delicateness to this fabric. As such, greater care needs to be taken to maintain its surface. Thus, the fabric can be made into blankets, duvets and covers, but is not as suitable for fitted sheets and pillowcases.

Crafter’s note: Recommended to avoid sharp and abrasive surfaces. This fabric can be tumble dried without much fibrillation. Use our duvet covers with the built-in loops when the blanket is worn out. Cooling and conductivity properties remain.

Sunmeadow Linen: the cozy side

45% linen, 55% cotton

This uses a blend of cotton and linen to achieve a lived-in, cozy texture right from the get-go!

It is also more durable and doesn’t thin out as fast. We made this fabric as the opposite layer to the Snowplains fabric, so that the conducted heat can escape through better ventilation.

Sometimes the Snowplains side can get a little cold, and the coziness of the Sunmeadow Linen is the direct contrast. It is also more durable, so the blanket remains usable even after years of use.

Crafter’s note: This surface gets softer and cozier after every wash, and is a direct contrast to the Snowplains fabric. That way, you will always have a surface to rely on.

Lyocell and down alternative fill

30% lyocell, 70% ultra-fine down-alternative polyester, 100 GSM

The 30/70 ratio balances anti-clumping and breathability. Down alternatives are non-porous, so they don’t trap heat or moisture in their fibers. Lyocell absorbs moisture, not just between the fibers, but into the fibers as well. The combination of the two allows better regulation of body temperature.

Crafter’s note: This is the best balance for fluffiness, despite the blanket being only 100 GSM. Both fibers are also extremely fine and smooth, which translates to how soft the blanket feels! These materials withstand washing well.

Additional fabric features: antibacterial

The Amara blanket also went through a special photon light treatment, achieving 20x less bacterial growth than untreated fabric in lab testing, without the use of chemicals (Intertek, ISO 20743:2021, Staphylococcus aureus, tested after 50 washes). We researched nano-metals and other forms of antibacterial treatment before settling on this enhancement.

Fabric crafter’s note: Antibacterial is a claim that has misled many, and really killing bacteria mostly requires additives, such as the copper in our Terra sheets. Most claims stem from the fabric being quick-dry, and thus having less bacteria, without actual proof. The Amara blanket’s surface causes bacteria to be immobilized, making it extremely difficult for them to reproduce upon contact with the blanket. While it does not “kill” the bacteria, it inhibits their growth, making the surface extremely unconducive for growth.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Amara good for hot sleepers?

Yes. The Snowplains side draws heat off your skin, with a lab-measured Q-max of 0.179 W/cm². The Sunmeadow Linen side lets that heat escape, and the 100 GSM fill keeps it light, so you get coverage without the heat of a regular duvet.

Can I tumble dry the Amara?

Yes, on low. The Snowplains fabric can be tumble dried without much fibrillation, and Intertek’s antibacterial result was measured after 50 wash cycles that included tumble drying. Keep zips and other abrasive items out of the same load.

Does the Amara kill bacteria?

No. Its photon light treatment inhibits bacterial growth rather than killing bacteria. In Intertek’s ISO 20743 test, run after 50 washes, Staphylococcus aureus grew about 20 times less on the treated fabric than on untreated fabric.
